How EO sterilization works

Ethylene oxide sterilizes at low temperature and without high pressure. It is effective against all types of microorganisms, does not corrode the product, and penetrates dry materials well.

This diagram explains the principle of a typical EO cycle. It does not show actual process parameters.
  1. Preconditioning

The product is brought to the right temperature and humidity in a preconditioning room so the gas acts evenly throughout the load.

  2. Sterilization in a sealed vessel

Air is evacuated, EO gas is injected and held for a set time under controlled temperature, humidity and gas concentration.

  3. Aeration

Some materials absorb the gas, so the product rests until the residual gas has dissipated and it is safe to use.

Products suited to EO sterilization

Sensitive to heat or moisture
Plastics, catheters, anesthesia equipment, electrical equipment
Longer life when gas sterilized
Rubber gloves, tubing, delicate surgical instruments

EOG sterilizer system flow

Every lot follows the same controlled path from receiving to dispatch.

  1. Receiving and inspection

Products arrive at the warehouse and are transferred by forklift. Each lot is inspected for form, size, weight, quantity and lot number, and biological and chemical indicators (BI & CI) are placed.

  2. Stage 1: Pre-conditioning chamber

Heated air circulation and clean steam bring the load to the required temperature and humidity.

  3. Stage 2: Sterilization chamber

Pre-vacuum, humidification with clean steam, EO gas injection and controlled exposure. Exhaust gas passes through a scrubber.

  4. Stage 3: Aeration room

Residual EO is removed from the products. Aeration air is treated by our biofilter before release.

  5. Release and dispatch

BI & CI are determined, the lot is inspected again and dispatched to the customer.

SIS biofilter system for EO emission treatment

Biofilter project: innovative EO emission treatment

At SIS our responsibility goes beyond safe and reliable sterilization. We continuously improve our processes to reduce environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. We are the world's first and only company to develop an environmentally responsible biofilter system for treating ethylene oxide (EO) emissions from the sterilization process before discharge.

How does it work?

  1. After EO sterilization, products are aerated so residual EO is removed from them.
  2. Air containing EO from the aeration process is directed through the biofilter before being discharged.
  3. Inside the biofilter, microorganisms break down EO and other biodegradable compounds, reducing the EO concentration in the treated air.
